week 1: nordic folk medicine

This past Sunday, the first kickoff class of Season 2 in 2022, was excellent with our guest teacher Kari Tauring. There was so much wisdom shared on Nordic cosmology on the 9 goddesses and 9 herb charms in old Norse poetry and we had many great questions. Another highlight was Kari having fun singing and showing us samples of her traditional items.

Here is the supplemental material that was handed out during the live class for you to download.

WEEK 2: HEALING AND GROWTH WISDOM'S FROM PLANT KIN OF OCEANIA

In this session with Dr2c (Papali'i Dr. Failautusi ‘Tusi’ Avegalio) you could feel his 'ike and mana'o transcend through the screen right into your soul. He shared with us origin and wisdom stories of plant kin carried through generations and how they are woven into the very essence of Polynesian worldviews and the plant kins relationships to healing and being whole.

Week 3:
Functional Mushrooms: Ancient healing remedies for modern times

Here at SHAB, we love Mushrooms! Talk about mushroom knowledge; our guest Danielle Ryn Broida (RH) AHG has it! This session was a fungi-abulous! Danielle delved into a bit about the wonderful work of Foursigmatic and mushroom morphology followed by deciphering the quality of products out in the market. Within this, she shared so many facts about mushrooms. For instance, did you know that there are six times more fungi species than all plants on earth? Wow! The heart of the talk was on five different mushroom species Lions Mane, Chaga, Cordyceps, Reishi, and Turkey Tail. Danielle's herbal wisdom is immense, organic, and truly holistic.

Week 4:
integrating MOVEMENT SKILLS & HERBALISM VIA ENERGETICS

Talk about a vital topic for our individual health; Ryn covered the importance of movement and how an individual’s constitution, habits, food choices, and stress can complicate or enhance constitutional imbalances. In conjunction with this, we learned how herbs and exercises could assist movement based on a person’s energetics (constitution). This topic is undoubtedly fascinating and really brings the idea of holistic health as a whole into perspective via thinking about our own bodies and how constitution-based movement can bring us back into balance.

Week 5:
Healing from a native perspective: la'au lapa'au (hawaiian medicine)

Week 5 with Kumu Keoki Kīkaha Pai Baclayon will be rescheduled for March 27th, 2022. Meanwhile enter the page below to watch a special recording on La’au Lapa’au and the 7-Laws of Health.

Week 6:
Bedouin Traditional Medicine

It is undoubtedly evident that Aref is passionate about what he does and is full of charisma. Weaved into his presentation, Aref talked about establishing a medicinal plant garden with over 100 plants and its social challenges. All the while he had us laughing with stories. Incidentally, storytelling plays a critical role in the preservation and continuation of the cultural heritage of indigenous peoples but also opens a window to an understanding of other cultures and ways of thinking.   Aref has years of deep knowledge of the Bedouin way of life and plant use. He graciously taught us about 12 different medicinal plants used in Bedouin tradition.

They had us mesmerized by the wealth of information shared about 6 fascinating plants of the high plains. They taught us about Lakota perspectives and the importance of understanding plant relationships and how to apply their multifaceted applications. See more inside…

Week 9 BONUS:
BLACK FOLK MEDICINE IN SOUTH CAROLINA: EXPLORING GULLAH PRACTICES AND TRADITIONS

With so little known about Gullah culture, practices, and traditions, much of it is shrouded in mystery to the general populace; this was an informative and inspirational BONUS edition! Faith Mitchell put into context the past trials and tribulations of the Gullah people. She beautifully conveyed how there is a resurgence and revival of this rich, vibrant culture. Of course, she showed us and talked about the herbal plants and the spiritual beliefs of the Gullah of the Sea Islands in South Carolina. Our Q and A session was a blast. Everything is available in the replay below.

Week 10 BONUS (FINAL SESSION):
E Kilohi mai (look in this direction): a brief survey of a Hawaiian healing paradigm

He spoke about the origins of illness and the components that are critical to staying healthy.
