Community Herbal Series Returns January 23,2022

We have been working behind the scenes and are excited to welcome back Season 2 of the Community Herbal Series. Each week for 8 weeks, we will have a fantastic guest speaker from different traditional plant medicine systems and herbal perspectives. For the first week, starting Sunday, Jan 23rd, our special guest speaker needs no introduction when it comes to Nordic folk traditions. For 33 years, she’s been involved with all things Nordic.

Kari says, in traditional Nordic culture, healing was mostly the domain of women. There are nine healing goddesses living on the mountain of medicine which is held together by the great world tree which is the source of great healing. Herbalism was practiced in tandem with the songs for the plants, the songs that beckon healing spirits, and the rituals that give the sick agency. Sometimes runic inscriptions or sung runes played a part in the healing session. Very often healing sessions occurred in the bathhouse.

In this session with Kari, we will learn the names and stories of the nine healing goddesses and about the oldest herbal charm (circa 900) in Old Norse, Old English, and modern English. She will also talk about the spirituality of herbal medicine in the ancient past as well as today.
